The acid-base balance of many horses is disrupted by incorrect feeding. The protein-rich and cereal-based diet as well as the oversupply of concentrated feed lead to hyperacidity in the body. The resulting metabolic disorders cause malfunctions of the organs, the skin, the hooves and inadequate microcirculation between the body cells. They are not supplied sufficiently with nutrients, H+ ions prevent the penetration of potassium, and the gas exchange (O2 and CO2) is impeded. A change in diet alone will not solve the problem.
